SecureFetch : what is it?

There are 2 components to SecureFetch; the web site www.securefetch.com and Message Centre. Message Centre is an application that you install on any machine that you want to be able to perform remote file searching on. The SecureFetch web site is where you go when you want to perform a remote search.

Message Centre is referenced by the icon and by the colour red in and diagrams.

You will need to perform the following steps in order to be ready to use SecureFetch:

1. Register and create an account for yourself at www.securefetch.com.

2. Download the windows executable from www.securefetch.com, you will need to login first.

3. Install the software on the machines that you need to provide remote access to.

4. Create an email address that is unique to each copy of . Each installation will collect email for its designated email address; therefore each will use its designated email address exclusively.

5. Configure each copy of by downloading or viewing the User Configuration documentation from www.securefetch.com

6. Now test the user access to your newly configured by logging into www.securefetch.com and selecting the Fetch link, completing the form and pressing Submit.

8. For problems check the www.securefetch.com FAQ page.

SecureFetch : how does it work?

User accesses the www.securefetch.com web site, logs in and completes the Fetch form and submits the request. The request may be to either obtain a list of file summaries that match the search criteria, similar to a web search, or to obtain the files themselves.

User request is submitted to the designated via encrypted email.

The running on the remote machine receives the request. Security is validated to ensure that the request was submitted by a valid user and that the user can perform the request, and if so the search is performed.

The results are then sent to the identified emails address, or to the designated email address defined in if the user is not authorised to send to any other email address.

Either the user or other person receives their email as normal and finds the response.

can also be installed in the corporate environment.

You will need to use a POP3 (soon IMAP or HTTP) Email account. This Email account must be used to send and receive requests for SecureFetch ONLY. Therefore you will need to obtain a separate Email account than your usual Email account to use this service.

SecureFetch and communicate using encrypted Emails. The request is generated by the www.securefetch.com web site using information supplied by the user requesting the service. The Email is encrypted and sent to the Email address that the targeted will be collecting. The performs the required operation and submits a response Email to a target Email address.

SecureFetch : what about security?

Security is our number one concern. When operations are enabled on remote machines we believe that the Corporation or User should be responsible to prevent any breaches in security.

Access to generate requests requires a username and password. This username and password is for access to a user account on the www.securefetch.com site only.

is configured to provide access to specific users. Each user is configured within to have access to specific functionality with specific privileges and has a separate username and password. When the user is completing the request on the www.securefetch.com web site, they must know the username and password of their account as it has been configured in the target . User specific requests and responses are logged separately and can be viewed using .

The request to the target is encrypted at the www.securefetch.com web site before being transmitted.

Soon we will be providing a new application that can read encrypted responses from . is already capable of generating encrypted emails.

SecureFetch Types of Service.

There are 2 types of service available within SecureFetch, Basic and Professional.

The Basic service (Available NOW)

This Basic service provides encrypted requests to be made to either collect or search remote files. The responses to search requests have the requests for individual files encrypted, but the response text, i.e. the first n bytes of following the match are unencrypted. The responses to file requests are not encrypted.

The Professional service (Available SOON)

This Professional service can also use special client software and all responses are fully encrypted. The client software is the only tool that can be used to view the encrypted responses. The responses to file requests can be unencrypted by the client software and saved to the local file system. The professional service gives the added security of ensuring that all responses transmitted are encrypted.

Message Centre : why is it called Message Centre?

The SecureFetch application is the first application to be incorporated within . We will be adding additional applications that provide different functionality as time goes by. Because the application can receive “messages” to perform any type of functionality we have named it to reflect this. Currently has just one application available to it, and that's File Searcher, but we will introduce new applications shortly.
